Local MP, Craig Mackinlay, took time out from campaigning for the local elections yesterday to visit The Clock House in Ramsgate to see the emergency repairs being carried out.
The works are essential to stabilise loose stonework around the Clock Tower, a piece of which had already fallen, damaging roof slates and endangering life. Specialist lead work has repaired leaks to the roof that were causing damage to the interior of the building creating damp conditions for the artefacts housed inside as part of the Ramsgate Maritime Museum Collection. The Collection includes items recovered from HMS Stirling Castle wrecked on the Goodwin Sands in 1703. Craig’s father, Colin, a keen BSAC scuba in the 1970s and 80s was part of the archaeological team who dived and recovered items for display from the historic ship.
Earlier this year, The Ramsgate Society secured a grant of £22,812 from the Historic England Heritage at Risk Response Fund for the work.
The Ramsgate Society also received the firm backing of the South Thanet MP for their longer term plans to refurbish the Clock House as a key waterfront building and cornerstone of Ramsgate’s regeneration.
Craig Mackinlay MP commented:
“I eagerly accepted The Ramsgate Society's invitation to view these emergency works up close.
“As Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Listed Properties, I appreciate how lucky we are to have The Clock House in Ramsgate which is Listed Grade 2* by Historic England.
“It is, quite simply, one of the most iconic historic buildings in the Royal Harbour and, arguably, the most beautiful building in Ramsgate. I was delighted to see the repairs that have taken place.
“I will take every opportunity to promote the town’s rich heritage and will continue to support The Ramsgate Society in pursuing their plans to refurbish the whole of the building in the months and years ahead.”
