Craig Mackinlay MP has hailed the election of Boris Johnson after 92,153 Conservative Party members voted to make him the Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Jeremy Hunt, the other remaining candidate in the race, won 46,656 votes.
The South Thanet MP was an early supporter of the former London Mayor and Foreign Secretary after conducting an online poll of South Thanet Conservative Association Members, which gave a clear local member endorsement for Boris.
Tuesday is Theresa May's last full day in office and Boris Johnson will take over as PM on Wednesday.
Craig Mackinlay MP commented:
“I’m delighted that we have elected Boris Johnson as our new leader.
“Boris brings flair, a clear Brexit message, new ideas and appeal across the electorate that no other candidate, however competent and decent, could reach.
“His primary task over the next few months is to give a positive and resolute lead on Brexit and keep his promise to leave the EU on 31st October, no ifs, no buts, no equivocation – with or without signing an acceptable Withdrawal Agreement.
“Already, fresh leadership is bringing with it a renewed sense of purpose and belief, hope and optimism, for both MPs and the country.
“The future is bright.”
