South Thanet MP, Craig Mackinlay, was a VIP guest at a Special Festival in celebration of Diwali on Saturday, 10 November. The event took place at Newington Community Centre on Princess Margaret Avenue, Ramsgate.
Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is one of the most significant festivals from South Asia. It is also the occasion for celebrations by Jains and Sikhs as well as Hindus.
The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning "rows of lighted lamps". Houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas.
Craig Mackinlay MP commented:
“The festival of Diwali has been celebrated by Hindus across the world for thousands of years to commemorate the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
“Its message is universal and applicable to people of all faiths and backgrounds.
“I was delighted to join our local Hindu community at Newington Community Centre and send my good wishes and happiness this Diwali.”
